What is Numerology?
In a nutshell, numerology is the study of numbers. It has ancient origins stemming from China, India, Greece, Egypt, and even Chaldea! It’s been around for centuries, so there must be something to it, right?
Each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a number. It is believed that by “decoding” the letters of anyone’s legal name with the corresponding numbers, you can reveal lots of information, such as the personality of an individual.
But wait, it gets even more exciting…
If we study numerology as it relates to a person’s birthday it is also thought to be possible to discover your life path – including the challenges and blessings that you will encounter throughout life!
Numerologists believe that numbers hold certain “vibrations”. Simply put, that means:
When you understand numbers and the symbolism behind them, you can “decode” things, such as your name.
You can then use this knowledge to empower every area of your life, including your relationships with others, your career, and even your spiritual life and growth.
I agree – totally awesome stuff!

Numerology is easy to learn and wonderful for people who are just getting their feet wet in metaphysics. Why?
Because you don’t have to learn the meanings of a zillion numbers. Numerology uses the numbers 1 through 9, 11, and 22.
For example, what does 25 mean? Who cares – it doesn’t matter in numerology :)
If your name had a numerical value of 25, you would simply add the numbers 2 and 5 together to equal 7. You just need to know the symbolism behind the number 7.
If your name had a numerical value of 11, then… that’s all she wrote. You would simply need to know the characteristics of the number 11.
I started out with numerology years ago by reading The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Numerology. Don’t let the name fool you – it’s a fantastic book for beginners.
OK, let’s continue chatting about what numerology is…
Why Use Numerology?
First, it’s fun.
Second, it’s helpful.
You can use numerology to discover the talents, strengths, weaknesses, and personalities of all the people in your life, including how certain people will “mesh” together.
For example, let’s say your oldest daughter was born on August 7, 2000. And your second daughter was born on April 17, 2005. Once you’ve learned a bit about what is numerology, you’d just use their birthdates and legal names, and voila! You can better understand the relationship between your two girls based upon the cosmos!
Once you understand what numerology is, you can use it to understand the best way to deal with someone, including your cranky teenager!
How it Works
Remember before I mentioned about vibration and said not to worry about it? Now that you have a basic understanding of numerology, let’s expand on that vibration idea.
The theory with numerology is that numbers hold certain energetic vibrations.
To understand this idea, let’s think of numbers as musical notes:
Did you ever see the movie Star Wars? Remember the theme music? It’s one of the most recognizable musical scores of any movie… ever.
We could say that the “vibration” of the Star Wars musical score is serious and intense.
In numerology, the vibration of the numbers is similar to a musical score. Except instead of music, the number and it’s position produce a vibration.
Depending upon the position of the number, it may produce “music” that is cyclic OR, vibrates through your life.
3 Different Types of Numerology
- Kabbalah numerology
- Chaldean numerology
- Pythagorean numerology
Kabbalah Numerology (also known as Hebrew Numerology)
People often use the terms Hebrew numerology and Kabbalah numerology interchangeably.
The Kabbalah is based on the idea that true knowledge and wisdom comes through the soul/Higher Self and mind, not the Ego (physical body, “flesh”).
Some features of Kabbalah Numerology:
- 22 vibrations ranging from 1 to 400.
- Originally developed from the Greek alphabet.
- The New Kabbalah developed to be used with the modern Roman alphabet.
- Uses some Pythagorean methods (see below).
Chaldean numerology originated from ancient Babylon. It uses some of the Kabbalistic name interpretations and blends in some aspects of astrology.
Some features of Chaldean Numerology:
- Nine is considered to be a holy number.
- Compound numbers are always used.
- Single numbers represent the external aspects of a person.
- Double digits are said to represent the inner aspects of a person.
The Greek metaphysician and mathematician, Pythagoras, was said to be the one who developed Pythagorean numerology.
You might remember him from geometry class… he was the one that said something about the hypotenuse of a right triangle being equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides of the triangle.
Lucky for us, he was also interested in spiritual development and he swirled his love of math with his love of metaphysics. The result: Pythagorean numerology.
Some features of Phythagorean numerology:
- Similar to Chaldean numerology, as both types analyze name and birth date and the interaction between the two.
- Uses the numbers one through nine and “master” numbers 11 and 22.
