A tarot card reading can be oh, so life changing! The best card readings lead to clarity and brilliant “ah-ha!” moments as you realize that, yes, you ARE on the right path (or at least know where the right path is).
You should walk away from your tarot card reading feeling empowered to take the next step in your life.
But in order to get a knock-your-socks-clean-off kinda reading, you must dodge these top 5 tarot card reading reading mistakes.
Mistake #1 – Putting Your Tarot Card Reader on a Pedestal
Oy, am I guilty of this!
After my daughter was born, I felt like I was going through a “quarter-life-crisis” (as hottie John Mayer puts it).
I was at a crossroads and losing sleep trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing with my life… Should I pursue my calling? Or, should I take the more conventional path that would be safe, secure, and make my family happy?
That lingering question led me to seek out the best psychic in the business at that time – a famous psychic medium who had authored a slew of books!
I mean, how could I go wrong with those kinds of credentials, right?
This psychic was so famous that I had to wait a full YEAR to speak to her. I was SO certain that she was going to clear everything up for me, that I didn’t make any moves of my own for that ENTIRE year.
Finally… the day arrived of the reading arrived. I was ready to get my mind blown. But I forgot one critical thing…
Tarot readers, psychics and mediums are people. And they are not perfect.
In my case, I waited over a year, asked my million-dollar question, got told something I already knew, and then sat down in disbelief.
The reading wasn’t a scam (more on that below), but it certainly wasn’t what I expected. Where were the fireworks and singing angels?!
My mistake was putting my entire decision in her hands — before ever even talking to her!
Soooo, before you have your tarot card reading, make sure you have realistic expectations. Don’t put all of your power in someone else’s hands like I did… Think of the reading as tool to finding clarity :)
Mistake #2: Falling for a Scam
Here’s the deal. A tarot card reading can be freakishly accurate and helpful. There is something utterly magical about the tarot, the spreads, and the gorgeous decks! Queen of Cups, Ace of Pentacles, oh my!
Honest tarot card readers (and psychics and mediums) are not at all interested in scamming you. Actually, the people that give legitimate readings are the kind of people that have your highest and best good at heart.
But, just like in most fields, there are some bad apples. Thankfully, identifying a scam can usually be done with a few cautionary steps (and an ear to your intuition).
The best piece of advice I can give you is this:
When you’re interacting with a tarot card reader or psychic, remember that even when discussing a topic that is serious or sensitive, you should not feel frightened. EVER.
Beyond that, make sure to educate yourself on some “common” psychic scams (here’s a post that will help).
If you want to have peace of mind when you enter your reading, find a tarot card reader that someone you know and trust recommends.
You can also check out reputable sites like Oranum with loads of user reviews. Seriously, Oranum is soooo modern (we’re talking live stream, friends!), that it makes it WAY harder to get scammed. BTW, I have a full blog post about Oranum here.)
Mistake #3: Not Setting an Intention for Your Tarot Card Reading
Taking a moment to think about WHY you are getting a tarot card reading will help set your reading up for success! :)
Your intention will dictate what questions you should ask and help the tarot reader connect with your energy so much easier.
Tarot card readings can be a LOT of fun – plan and simple. But getting one with no clear intention or goal can lead to disappointment and mismanaged expectations.
With that, here’s some tips for getting clear on your intention:
- As you prepare for your psychic reading, ask yourself what area of your life you feel a lot of tension around. Is it your career? Your family? Your sense of purpose or happiness? That area is where you should focus on in your reading.
- Ask yourself what you want to get out of your reading. Is it clarity? More joy in your heart? Peace of mind? Or something else? Knowing what you want to get out of your tarot card reading is so simple, yet SO powerful!
Mistake #4: Asking Ultra-Specific Questions
I get it. Questions like, “Will I get the job I’m applying for?” and “Should I try to find a different job?” can sound juicy in the moment, but they don’t lead to the best tarot readings. Here’s why…
A yes/no answer might seem awesome, but they don’t leave any room for in-depth answers.
For example, if you’re feeling a lot of tension about your job, you can ask things like, “What kind of jobs will make me happy?” and “What kind of personal qualities am I meant to be using in my career?”
These open ended questions allow energy to flow and prompt you to dig in and get to the root of the issue.
Think about it: WHY aren’t you fulfilled in your current job? Is it something you can avoid in your next one?
This method of questioning gives you the opportunity to leave your reading feeling empowered and enlightened.
Tip: Don’t stress out trying to ask “perfect” questions. Just try getting more than a yes/no answer so you can get as much insight as possible :)
Mistake #5: Offering up a Ton of Personal Info
This is not to say that you should “test” the tarot reader or psychic by withholding information and asking them to “guess”. That’s just a game that’s a waste of your time and definitely not for your highest and best good.
(Tip: Instead, take a little time to validate and feel a connection with your psychic BEFORE you hop on a chat or call.)
In real psychic and tarot readings, you don’t need to give a ton of information. Actually, it can make it more difficult for the intuitive or medium to read you.
A great way to let the tarot reader know that he/she is on track is to respond with phrases like:
- “Yes, that makes sense!” or
- “No, that doesn’t resonate.”
These simple responses allow the energy to keep flowing and help dig into what’s for your highest good.
