Spiritual grounding is important if you are doing energy work, developing your psychic gifts, or working as an intuitive or medium.

What is Grounding?
Grounding means balancing your spiritual and physical energy by connecting with the earth. When you are grounded you feel like you are here: in the physical, in the present.
It’s super important for healers, mediums, intuitives, and other energy workers to be grounded. But, grounding is great for anyone, even those with anxiety!
So, first things first. How do you know you’re not grounded?
When you’re not grounded you may feel:
- like you are floating
These feelings happen because you’ve got excess energy running through your system. It’s totally normal for those who work with energy, and nothing to be worried about.
But, practicing spiritual grounding (a.k.a. earthing) can:
- get rid of excess energy and “plug” you back into Mother Earth
- balance out your energy
- get you back in touch with your physical body
When I first started developing my intuitive abilities, no one told me that I needed to practice grounding… and I wondered why I felt so out of touch with my body. For example, in the first mediumship circle I sat in, I shook uncontrollably.
But when I learned spiritual grounding techniques, all that went away. :)
So if you are feeling ungrounded, the following tips will help. Just keep in mind that not every tip will work for every person. In other words, what works for you might not work for me, etc.
Be patient and try different techniques (or a combination of them) until you find what works for you.
Spiritual Grounding Techniques
Eating is great for grounding. (I always eat after I give psychic medium readings).
Eating reminds us that we have a physical body. Also, the process of digestion helps bring energy down and away from our crown and third eye chakras.
Ayurvedic medicine folks believe that root vegetables are especially good for grounding. Why? Because they grow under the surface of the earth, and thus, make you feel more anchored to the earth. And of course, they are delicious when they’re roasted!
Root veggies are also a great choice because they are high vibe foods and won’t dull your psychic gifts. You can learn more about a psychic diet here.
If you don’t have any veggies around, don’t despair! Use what you have on hand and try experimenting with different foods to see what works best for you.
A little bit of chocolate is also great for spiritual grounding. Chocolate is natural and grows in pods on the theobroma (cacao) tree. In other words, it’s super “earthy.”
If you’re going to try this method for grounding, use the rawest and highest quality chocolate you can. Just keep in mind that raw cacao is more bitter than the drug-store chocolate many of us grew up eating. To me though, the grounding properties of raw cacao are worth the sacrifice.
If you’re not ready to venture into the land of raw cacao, start with dark, organic chocolate, such as Green & Black’s. Have fun with this one, chocoholics!
3. Connect with nature
You may know about this spiritual grounding technique because it’s been around forever. (Remember, our ancestors didn’t have the fab shoes that we have nowadays. Instead, they were often barefoot and connected to the earth.)
There are a couple of ways to use nature for grounding:
- Pull off your shoes and walk barefoot outside. Feel the earth under your feet. You can walk on grass, dirt, or at the shore. Focus on the sensation on the earth beneath you. Then, dig your heels into the earth. It feels amazing!
- Gardening is also excellent for earthing! So get outside and put your hands in some soil, and be at one with the earth.
- Hug a tree. Yep, it works!
4. Salt bath
Salts are wonderful because of their natural healing properties. Combine that with the cleansing properties of water and you’ve got a winning combo!
Sea salt, Hawaiian salt, or Himalayan salt (my personal fave!) are excellent choices. And don’t worry, it’s super easy to take a salt bath. Just add about a cup or your favorite salt to the warm, running water. Then, sit and enjoy for 20 – 30 minutes.

- Scents can also help with spiritual grounding, so adding some essential oil to the water can be nice, too.
- If you don’t have a tub (or time to soak), use a salt based body scrub in the shower instead.

5. Meditation for spiritual grounding
Meditation is wonderful for anything, and spiritual grounding is no exception. To get started, sit upright in a comfy chair with your feet planted on the floor.
Next, imagine your feet have roots (like a tree) and are anchoring themselves deep into the earth. Breathe and allow your energy to balance.

6. Crystals and stones
Certain stones and crystals are great for grounding as well. Try carrying any of the following in your pocket, or wear a piece of gemstone jewelry:
- black kyanite
- blue kyanite
- black tourmaline
7. Move around
When you aren’t sure how to ground yourself, try physical activity. Moving your body can help you feel centered quickly.
For example, exercise is great because you connect with your body and get rid of excess energy at the same time. Of course, yoga is fabulous because it centers you on a spiritual and physical level.
Don’t have time to hit the gym? No problem.
Other physical activity works, too! Believe it or not, washing dishes, cooking dinner, or walking the dog can also ground you!
