As a psychic medium (someone who connects with spirits), I often get asked what happens to the soul after suicide.
People want to feel a sense of peace and know that their loved one is okay. They also want to know what their loved one’s soul may have experienced when they ended their life.
Today, we’re answering what happens to the soul after suicide.

What Happens to the Soul After Suicide?
Since every person’s spirit is different, there’s no way to know exactly what happens to a particular person when they ended their life…
It depends on the circumstances of their death and the life path of that soul.
From the spirits I’ve communicated with, it seems that there are 3 choices they can make after suicide. They are:
1. Stay around
Some souls who have committed suicide stay earthbound for a bit instead of going to the Other Side right away.
I believe this is what happened when my aunt took her life. You see, for about a week after her death, I could feel her spirit around me all the time. Plus, I was getting a TON of signs from her.
But don’t worry…
Your loved one is not alone. Their spirit guides and angels are supporting them, and helping them transition smoothly.
So, why do some souls stay around?
Sometimes, souls don’t cross over right away because they regret taking their own life. Because of this, they may want to keep their consciousness on this plane.
Most often though, they stay around because they want to communicate with those they left behind… and they want them to know they are okay, and at peace.
Once a spirit feels they have connected with their loved ones, they cross over with an acceptance of what they have done.
Note: If you are interested in speaking with one of the mediums that I spoke with after my aunt’s passing, you can do so using this link. Just ask to speak to a medium.
2. Take a rest
Souls that have committed suicide may also decide to go to a resting place before fully crossing over. This allows them to reflect on their life and rest.
Be assured, this is not a place of purgatory.
Rather, it’s a loving energetic space where the soul takes the time it needs to come to terms with their suicide. This includes releasing any negative energy that may make crossing over difficult.
In this resting place, the soul can get support from spirit guides to release shame, guilt and anger. This helps raise their energetic vibration so they can accept their passing and move on to the other side.
How long do souls rest?
After suicide, souls can choose how long they stay in this resting place before fully moving into the Light.
Some stay for what equates to minutes while others stay for years. So, if you don’t feel your loved one around too much after they pass away, they may be taking a much needed rest!
But don’t worry… there is only peace in this place. And, there is no “time” on the other side. So, what is years for us may seem like hours in the spirit world.

3. Cross over
Once a soul has shed any negative energy from their suicide (or the circumstances leading to it), they are ready to fully cross over into the Light. Once there, they can even become a spirit guide if they want to!
These souls may help others who, like themselves, imagine suicide as the only way out. Or, they may help others who are dealing with similar life situations that they went through.
And if they choose not to be a spirit guide, there are plenty of other things to keep them busy! Read the article What do People Do in Heaven to learn more.
The afterlife is a place of perfect peace where souls remain until they are ready to reincarnate again. Once there, you will be able to feel, sense, and even communicate with your loved one in heaven if you wish to.
If you are in crisis
If you or a loved one are in crisis, seek help immediately.

Final Thoughts and Grief Resources
If someone you love has committed suicide, you may feel helpless. I did when my aunt passed away.
You may also feel more than grief at their death because you were unable to say goodbye, or prevent their suicide.
But there are still things you can do to bring yourself peace.
1. Get support
Foundations and Organizations
- SAVE: Suicide Awareness Voices of Education. Grief support for suicide loss survivors. Their mission: “offering a place to turn when the worst has happened.”
- Samaritans — grief support for suicide loss.
- Alliance of Hope — for suicide loss survivors. Forum and blog on their website.
- Hope for Bereaved – General grief support (and memorial butterfly garden)
2. Continue to communicate with your loved one
Your loved one wants to communicate with, and comfort you. Open yourself up to spirit so you can communicate with them. If you are having difficulty feeling that connection, be patient with yourself. You can also spend time in meditation to become more connected to your loved one in heaven.
Your loved one in spirit hears you when you talk to them. And they can reply (and will) if you are open to the ways in which they do that. So be sure to lookout for signs from heaven. (Some have even experienced texts from spirit!)
So, communicate with them. That’s what they want. And more than anything, they want you to know that regardless of their suicide, they are still here for you.
To speak with a medium
You can also talk to a psychic medium. I recommend the mediums here, because they are the ones who helped me when my aunt took her life. Just ask to speak to a medium. I recommend you choose the 15-Minute for $10 reading or the $1 per minute reading. If you or a loved one are in crisis, seek professional help from a crisis hotline, doctor, or emergency room right away.
