Let’s talk real psychics vs. fake psychics. One of the most common things I hear about my field is how “scammy” it is. *Insert sad face*
But honestly, I get the concern.
There is a stigma around psychic readings that a lot of people struggle with. Psychic chat sites especially have gotten a pretty bad rap, right? Even I struggled with it during my first online reading!
So, let me clear the air once and for all:
There IS such a thing as real psychics and mediums. Usually, they are kind people who would love to sit with you, comfort you, and offer you a cup of Oolong tea!
Real psychics, mediums, tarot and angel card readers are NOT interested in scamming you.
The scammy stuff we are talking about is what the fake psychics with zero spiritual abilities (who are out to make a quick buck), do.
Psychic scams cost you money and cause you stress (I know because I was almost scammed a couple of times!), and I never want you to be on the end of that hot mess.
So let’s dig in!
First, we’ll cover common scams and then, we’ll get to the tips on how to find real psychics…

1. Curse Scam
UGH, people, just UGH. This is first on the list because it’s one of the oldest psychic scams around. It’s probably been around since the dawn of time… seriously!
This is when a “psychic” tells you that you have a dark presence around you (like a poltergeist or some other junk) or that you or your family is cursed.
Of course, they can cure it for you! (I’m being sarcastic, you know that, right?)… it will just cost you your right arm and first born child.
P.S. They may also say they’ll cure you for FREE (uh-huh…) you just have to pay a hefty fee for their “supplies”.
I’ve had far too many people lose sleep thinking they are cursed.
Remember these words, friends: Curse = Scam.
2. Cookie Cutter Response Scam
Don’t let the name fool you – this is anything but sweet!
Basically, this scam happens when a fake psychic gives you the same info that everyone else is getting.
The way psychic frauds get away with it is by keeping the reading extremely vague – that way, it can apply to anyone. Seriously… you and me and Selena Gomez… we’re all getting the same reading!
This scam occurs a lot via email – so they can literally copy and paste!
3. Attention Grabbing Message Scam
This is when you find a message in your email or Facebook inbox from a psychic or medium. They may say that they have a message for you, or that they are a medium and claim to have a message from your loved one in heaven.
They may even tell you your loved one is having some sort of distress.
If you reply back, they will tell you that you can have the rest of the “message” in exchange for a fee.
Pro tip: Ignore and delete all unsolicited messages… real psychics don’t do this.
And please, for the love of all things green, do not worry that a loved one in spirit is in distress.
I’ve been giving mediumship readings since 2000 and I have never encountered a spirit who is in distress. Quite the opposite, in fact! (If you’re curious, check out the 3 Things Your Loved Ones in Heaven Want You to Know post.)
4. Promise of a Cure Scam
Here’s the short of it: There are no guarantees in life. If a “real psychic” (or Reiki, reflexology, cranial sacral, EFT, acupuncture tech) PROMISES or GUARANTEES a cure – they are NOT real at all.
Fake psychics try to take advantage of people when they are vulnerable by promising that they can heal them.
P.S. Also check out their fees – beware of those charging unusually high fees in exchange for a promise of healing.
5. Promise of Love or Good Fortune Scam
Are you seeing a pattern here yet?
Promise = Scam
The “love or good fortune” scam is when a phony psychic promises that they can bring you true love or financial abundance by casting a spell or curse on someone else.
I know you’re wondering who could agree to something like that!
But, many super smart people fall into this trap because fake psychics are SO good at telling people exactly what they want to hear. The fake psychics may also tell them that they are working with white magic and that no one is really getting hurt.
OK, if you feel icky and like you need a shower, don’t lose hope! We’re getting to the good stuff next:
How to Find Real Psychics
I promise, I didn’t write all of this to discourage you from getting a reading. I LOVE readings and there are plenty of ethical and real psychics who offer guidance from a place of love.
Remember this golden rule: Even when discussing a topic that is serious or sensitive with a real psychic, you should not feel frightened.
Pro tips for finding real psychics, tarot readers, or mediums:
1. Use a referral if possible
This is the best ways to know who you’re working with before you even interact with them. If one of your friends or family members has had great experiences with a real psychic – hunt that name down!
2. Do your homework
If you can’t use a referral, socially vet the person before meeting with them.
Ask yourself things like:
- Do I like this psychic’s online presence?
- Does this psychic have testimonials?
- What is their website like?
- Are there any blog posts on their site (so you can see if they seem like a good, ethical person)?
- Do I feel a connection with this psychic reader?
- Pro tip: I’m really like Oranum for readings because you can SEE the psychics working – live! It is soooo modern AND it makes it WAY harder to get scammed. Definitely check them out here. (I also have a full blog post about them here.)
3. Trust your gut
I know, I know. You’re probably thinking, “hello, I’m not psychic, that’s why I’m looking for a psychic…”
But you DO have intuition – we all do.
So just do a quick “check in” with your gut. If you find a potential psychic, how do you feel about him or her? Good or just… blah?
Again, Oranum is super cool for this because you get to see all of the psychics in a live stream before you enter into a private reading. If you’re not feeling the psychic rockin’ the crystal ball… scroll around some more and find someone more suited to you!
4. Visit a New Age store
The great thing about MOST new age stores is that test their psychics before they allow them to work in the store. There are LOTS of real psychics working in metaphysical stores. Find one that has a vibe you like and ask things like:
- Have your psychics been tested by the shop owner?
- Which psychic/medium/tarot reader do you recommend and why?
5. Ignore anything unsolicited
This includes Facebook messages, emails, and people walking up to you on the street.
On RARE occasions, a medium or intuitive will be moved to pass along a spontaneous message, but here’s how to know if it’s real:
- The message will be positive.
- They will ask your permission FIRST. Remember, not everyone believes in psychic ability or the afterlife. Real psychics do not want to frighten or upset you, while frauds don’t care.
Well friends, I hope you use this article to go forth and get many safe and ethical readings from real psychics!
Readings are an amazing thing and are better than staying stuck and not asking for help, right? Don’t let scams scare you away, just do your homework and be aware of what’s going on.
