Marie became interested in psychic medium readings after her dad passed away. She really wanted to see a medium, but there was one problem… she was terrified!

Believe it or not, this is common. Some folks get nervous because they don’t know what to expect — it’s the fear of the unknown.
So, let’s get informed and wipe away that fear so you can focus on what’s important — connecting with your loved one in spirit.
What to Expect When You See a Medium
No two mediums or psychic medium readings are alike. They are as unique as snowflakes!
And while it’s true that each medium has her own style, what you are told in your reading depends on:
- What your loved one in spirit has to say
- The personality and gifts of the medium (more on that in a minute)
Most mediums begin by telling their clients what to expect in the reading. Then, the medium will connect with your loved ones in heaven.
Spiritual mediums give a “voice” those in spirit. I joke with my clients that, even though they are paying for the reading, my real client is the spirit. :) So be sure to be opened minded, and let your loved one in heaven lead the reading!
Here are some of the types of things you may hear in a reading:
Characteristics – This can be things about your loved one such as their:
- Hair color
- Body type
Evidence – Evidence are things that prove the continuity of life after death. These can be things about your loved one like:
- Their name or names of others in the family
- How your loved one passed away, or health challenges they faced
- A favorite hobby or pastime they had
- A favorite food
- The number of children or grandchildren they had
Message – Now for the best part! The most important part of any mediumship reading is the message from your loved one in spirit. Messages can be anything at all. I’ve had spirits pass messages about everything from family pets to upcoming weddings!
Tip: Psychic medium readings can be done in person or via video chat (affiliate)- there is no difference in the quality. You can be sitting in the same room as an intuitive person, or across the world – it doesn’t matter.
How soon after a loved one passes away should you get a reading?
Psychic medium readings can be done at any time. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable.
Some of my clients have had readings just days after their loved one passed away and find it a very healing experience.
Yet others feel more comfortable working through their grief for a few months first. You should always follow your heart when deciding when to see a medium.
What the medium is experiencing during the reading
Most after death communications (i.e,. mediumship) are what we refer to as mental mediumship. In other words, your loved one communicates with the medium telepathically.
For clarity, here’s what that means:
Let’s say you have a mediumship reading to connect with your Grandpa Joe who died.
- When the medium hears him speaking to her, she is hearing him in her mind, telepathically. It sounds a lot like when you are reading to yourself.
- When the medium she sees Grandpa Joe, she is seeing him in her mind’s eye (third eye). It looks sort of like when you are visualizing.
- If Grandpa passed of a heart attack, the medium may feel a twinge in her chest, or she may have a sense that this is how he passed.
4 More things you need to know about psychic medium readings
1. You will recognize your loved ones personality
Did you know that when we’re in spirit, our personality doesn’t change?
That means, if Grandpa was funny when he was alive, he will still be funny in spirit. (He will probably even make you and the medium laugh!)
On the flip side, if your loved one was quiet or super smart, that personality will also shine through.
So, if your loved one wasn’t good at managing money, don’t ask him for tax advice during the reading. :)
2. Your loved one may not come through
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that your loved one in heaven will come through during the reading. Typically they will, but there is never a guarantee. (In 20 years as a psychic medium, I only experienced this once.)
Sometimes, your loved one may be resting after a difficult life or doing other heavenly things! :)
But there are things you can do to there are things you can do to help ensure you connect:
- Think about your loved one before your reading
- A few days before the reading, invite your loved one to your appointment
- Talk to your loved one in heaven (they can hear you)
3. All spiritual mediums are different
Even though all psychic mediums do the same work, they each bring their own personality to their readings. Some are serious, others are funny, and some even draw spirit! It all depends on the personality of the medium.
Also, some mediums are super detailed and can tell you names or dates. And other mediums are spot-on with the personality of the spirits they bring through.
4. Forget the “F” Word
The “F” word I’m talking about is fear. But you already knew that, right? :)
Don’t worry. Being nervous is normal. In fact, about 90% of the people I’ve given psychic medium readings to were nervous before we started. So you are not alone!
The good news is that real, ethical mediums take their job seriously. They will not say or do anything to scare you. So go ahead and relax.
And speaking of relaxing… when you feel relaxed, it helps the energy flow better. That means you get a better reading, and connection with your loved one!
