Ah, what’s in a name? Can name numerology really reveal the energy surrounding your life? Does your so-called, run-of-the-mill name hold profound meaning? Does it show, essentially, who you are?
Can it give you insight about other people and how to deal with them?
When my niece was a kid, she was friends with a girl named Gertrude. She was the sweetest, most adorable little red head (complete with freckles!), but everyone called her Geeky Gertrude. I felt so bad for her!
I wish I had known about name numerology back then, because I would have helped Little G come up with a cool nickname that she felt more energetically connected to.
That’s the great thing about name numerology – you can analyze the name a person uses, has used in the past, or is considering using.
You can even use it to help name your child or business!
Discovering Your Destiny through Name Numerology
Numerology is the study of the symbolism associated with numbers.
In a nutshell, it can provide insight about your life and destiny.
I know… goosebumps!
Numerology uses your birth date (which obviously doesn’t change), and your name, which DOES change.
When your name changes, so does the energy associated with it.
This is what makes name numerology so fascinating!
Quick name numerology facts:
- Using numbers as a handy guide, you can uncover someone’s personality, strengths, talents, and what sorts of emotional challenges they struggle with.
- You can also use these insights to figure out what you need – like, what’s best for your soul and life purpose. Yep, it can get really deep!
- Your birth date can tell you about your “innate” traits – the ones that will be with you for life – even if your name changes.
How to Figure Out What Your Name Means
In numerology, there are several important numbers that play a role in your life energies. They are:
- Birth date number
- Life Path
- Soul Urge
- Personality number
The two that are used specifically in name numerology are the Life Path number and the Expression number.
BTW, here’s a quick and handy resource that calculates your Life Path number for you and explains what it means.
Full disclosure: The above tool is awesome and totally free to use. If you later decide to purchase a report, this site earns a commission… but I only recommend stuff that I love and have used myself.
Life Path Number—Reveals your life’s direction and the life lessons you need to learn. This number is calculated by using your birth date.
That means she is empathic, sensitive, and humble. It also means she has an affinity for leadership and responsibility, but also struggles with putting herself first.
- If you’d like to calculate your own numbers, this post will teach you how.
- Or you can have my friends at Numerologist.com calculate it for you and tell you what it means. (SUPER cool and highly recommended!)
Expression Number—Your expression number delves deeper into your talents, abilities and interests. Basically, it helps you discover what makes you tick.
It is calculated by using your full birth name and is sometimes called your “Destiny number.”
All you do is use the chart below (print it out by right clicking here), add up all the numbers that make up your birth date, and voilá – that’s your expression number!
Going back to Gerty, her expression number is also 6, which means she is a loyal, dependable, and generous woman.
And just like Gerty, you can discover your true self by utilizing a name numerology chart.
But wait! Gerty goes by Gertrude and Gerty…won’t that change her numbers?
As you know, we can go through a variety of name changes through our life: adoptive surnames, nicknames, shortened names, married names, professional names, etc.
Major modifications can be made to your energies when your name changes.
How Different Names Affect Us
In most numerology systems, you will use your full BIRTH NAME, except in Chaldean numerology, which uses your “everyday” name.
But, since different names hold different vibrations, I personally think it’s fun and insightful to run name numerology reports using both names… so Gertrude Knight and Gerty Knight.
Armed with this numerological goodness, you can compare names and see how the results vary.
Would Gerty’s report reveal more about the way she portrays herself around family and friends? After all, it’s a more relaxed “nickname”.
Would a name numerology report for Gertrude more accurately describe how she acts in the office? Hmm, food for thought, no?
Tip: There will always be residual energy from your full birth name (the one that’s on your birth certificate) that stays with you for life. But still, why not have fun and try both?
Naming anything takes a lot of thought. I stressed for a week as to what to name my cat – never mind my children!
Name numerology can be helpful when naming your little bundle of joy.
If you want an idea of how your child’s name may affect his or her life, run numerology reports on the baby names you like.

Naming Your Business
Here’s a tip:
The BEST method is to choose a name that, combined with your birth date, results in an Expression number or Life Path number that is either a 1 or an 8 to increase the opportunity for moola and success!
Changing your Name
I have a friend that changed the spelling of her adopted daughter’s name, which made big energetic changes. If you’re considering a name change, too, use these tips:
- Remember, you’ll always have residual energy from your birth name. It’s kinda like how if you are born with brown hair, you can dye it or go gray, but you’ll always have those childhood pictures of yourself as a brunette, you know?
- Pick a name that you adore (obviously), and that balances the energy that’s already present in your birth name.
For example, let’s say your birth name reveals that you are a numerology number 1. Number 1’s have very strong energy!
In that case, maybe you want your new name to “balance” out that energy a bit. In that case, you might select a name with a softer, more chill, number 2 vibe.
Does that make sense?
On the other hand, if you want to “beef up” certain traits, consider a name that has a stronger energy, like a 1, 3, 5, or 7.
Married vs. Maiden Name
If you’re about to tie the knot, it’s fun to do name numerology on your birth name vs. your upcoming married name (if you’re going to change it).
Take a peek behind the curtain. Do you gain any insights or have any Ah-ha moments when comparing the names?
I promise, it’s fun! (So much fun that a friend of mine ran numerology reports as gifts for all of her bridesmaids!)
Final Thoughts and a Free Numerology Report
As you can see, there are a lot of different ways you can use name numerology in life.
I love numerology because it provides insight that can make your life path easier and clearer.
It’s like wearing a clean, new pair of glasses after wearing ones with a scratched lens for years!
