Animal Love Loss of Pet Quotes
The Rainbow Bridge poem is the classic and beloved work about pet loss. I discovered it after I lost my precious cat, Cosmo, in 2008.
Losing my Cosmo
I, like so many others, believe that pets are a part of the family. Of course they are all adorable, with their sparkly eyes and little noses, but what really connects us to them is their amazing energy and unconditional love.
Love and friendship from our animal friends is a love from the soul.
It’s pure, forgiving, and non-judgmental. They can calm and heal us with their sweet dispositions.
That’s why it was so devastating when I lost my cat Cosmo in 2008. He passed suddenly on a snowy day in February. I was absolutely crushed and cried for weeks. For the first few days after he passed, I could barely function and just lay on the couch crying. I still get really emotional thinking about that time.
A couple of days after he passed away, I called my friend (a huge animal lover), who had lost many pets herself. Through tears, I told her that the worst part was not having Cosmo to snuggle next to me at night.
She told me to go and read The Rainbow Bridge poem. She explained that she feels so comforted by it, that she had it framed and hung in her den.
Now that I’m familiar with the poem, I have to agree that it is something special.
The Rainbow Bridge Poem
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent.
His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.
